FMP Session 2: Key Signatures, Notes, Major Scale Pattern, Melody, Harmony

Key Signature- a series of tones forming any given major or minor scale. The order of tones organized together to support one overall tonality.

Root note - the tone which identifies the key of a piece of music, often the lowest note.

Recognizing the Root Note, these are good ways to discover the root note of a song, often the key is indicated by one of the following:
1. Lowest note in a song
2. Recurring note in a song
3. First note in a chord progression, or beginning of measures
4. Last note in a song

Natural notes: are notes that do not contain sharps (#) or flats (b).

Sharp (#) and (b) Flat notes are the notes in between natural notes.
For example: the F# note is between F at the 6th string 1st fret and G at the 6th string 3rd fret. This note can also be called Gb.

Rule: all natural notes are a step apart (2 frets) except B to C and E to F, which are a 1/2 step apart (1 fret).

Major Scale Pattern:
the spaces between scale degrees (notes) are called intervals.

Melody: a hook, a jingle, a series of notes that stick in your ear. a series of notes that are pleasing to the ear.

Harmony: a tone that complements a melody.
